The Nightmare of a Research Paper
Ever since I was a young child, The Nightmare Before Christmas soon became a traditional Christmas movie as well as Halloween movie. With its marvelous stop-motion animations to the uniquely designed characters. It had soon built a small home in my creative heart. I very much enjoyed the film, the heartwarming story of Jack Skellington discovering the joys life that he had once lost as well as meeting the love of his life. This was a tale that everyone knew and loved, but once I truly revisited and analyzed it I started to notice many flaws. For instance the fact that once Jack Skellington visits the land known as Christmas and immerses himself in it, and then takes over the holiday as his rightful duty. Is started to reflect on how odd it is, when broken down it is evident that Jack almost invades the land and takes over its cultural tradition as his own. It also showed his lack of care when he completely stole it, he may have had somewhat good intentions of wanting to explore and see something new. Except for the way he went about it, he steals the tradition/holiday as his own without even consulting anyone. It relates to how historically humans have invaded lands and taken over cultures as their own. Another important scene to note was when Jack decides to bring his own Christmas cheers to the humans, the humans immediately shoot his down with missiles. This shows how violent humans maybe, attacking the unknown with firepower rather than questions. This also relates historically as well as concurrently how humans are so defensive and violent. In my research, I would like to show what it means to be invaded and attacked. I want to show how wrong it is to culturally invade as well as how absurdly violent humans in are internal. In my adaptation, I will be showing the mystical land of the Holidays being invaded by humans for profit, fear and cor culture. While this is happening I will also be showing how unity between the holidays can stop the greed and corruption of humans.
Annotated Bibliography
“Shots Fired: Gun Violence in America”
This article specifically goes into the statistics of the amount of gun violence in America as well as analyzing some of them. It also includes real events and stories as well as opinions from the public. The writer also has the opinions and statements of police officers, for instance
“‘This year alone CPD has recovered more guns combined than LAPD and New York PD combined. So essentially since January 1st, the police department has recovered one gun per hour of this year, one illegal gun per hour,’ Superintendent Johnson said” (Thomas). This quote shows the absurd amount of guns in America. It shows and implies how violent humans can be when given weapons as well as the unnecessary amount of them. The author also brings up statics of suicide rates caused by guns, these statistics definitely showed the importance of restraint among humans. This will help with my project as it helps depict how violent humans can be when given weapons.
“Relationship between Teamwork and Team Performance: Experiences from an ERPsim Competition”*
The article discusses the importance of teamwork from the data it gathered from the tests they ran using ERPsim. They gathered this data from individual trials to group trials. The author goes on and talks about what affects teamwork “Team composition, work structure, and task characteristics have all been shown to affect team performance (Gladstein, 1984; Salas, Cooke, and Rosen, 2008). Team member behaviors that contribute to team effectiveness are also of great interest” (Hwang). These are all key pieces and parts that change the dynamic and function of the group. The test also included the applicant's opinions on their teammates and members, this showed how it affects each individual on a personal level. This will assist my research by showing that once the holidays come together they can work as a team to solve their problems. In my project, they have one common enemy and one goal in mind allowing teamwork to be their advantage in this dilemma.
“The importance of culture”
The article shows and discusses the impact of culture can have on an individual such as
They are a source of delight and wonder, and can provide emotionally and intellectually moving experiences, whether pleasurable or unsettling, that encourage celebration or contemplation. Culture is also a means of expressing creativity, forging an individual identity, and enhancing or preserving a community’s sense of place (Ontario).
It explores the meaning and affects a culture can bring. This quote not only shows how impactful it may be to an individual personality and characteristics but also to their creativity/ expression. It also goes on about it developing social skills and helping them ingrain into society, this is especially crucial to children as it can bring about many social skills. Not only does it help with social skills but it also brings a sense of unity in a community. This will help with my project by showing the viewers what it means to maintain a culture and how valuable it may be to the community.
“Why is Culture Important and How Does it Influence People?”
This article also goes into more detail on how culture can affect an individual.
Similar to the previous article it discusses all the facts and also mentions how it can change individuals thinking process “Our culture determines the structure of our thinking, which influences our perceptions.” (OpinionFront) The author also goes on to mentions some of the sociological factors that may occur as well as come physiological factors. It also brings in points about how other cultures can have different impacts on an individual. This article will help reinforce the importance of culture and how it can personally change an individual. As well as dive into why it is necessary to maintain and protect/ respect other cultures.
“Bad to the Bone: Are Humans Naturally Aggressive?”
In this article, the author battles with the concept of whether or not humans are truly violent creatures. The author uses a few studies over chimpanzees to try and break the question down by using the research. The article then comes to a conclusion of how humans by nature aren’t as claimed to be. It seems as though humans are thru their environment
In the human fossil and archeological record, there is no good evidence of intense aggression and warfare until very recently, and it is associated with the advent of permanent settlements, agriculture, and social stratification. Increased social inequality and more complex political and economic systems seem to correlate with more types of aggression and violence in human societies (Fuentes).
This quote shows what can impact humans to cause them to be violent or behave in violent mannerisms. It also mentions how humans can be aggravated by the society they are born into or environment they are placed into growing up. It's not only based on their childhood as it seems that these harmful societal events can follow thru to adulthood as well. This will help guide my project in the case that it shows how humans can be violent and the strains of society. I believe that this goes hand in hand with the previously stated article about gun violence, as it shows how humans with aggression can behave when given violent weapons.
“Social Influence and the Collective Dynamics of Opinion Formation” *
This article discusses how effective the influences of society can have on an individual and their mindset. For example, “When facing the opinions of peers on a given issue, people tend to filter and integrate the social information they receive and adjust their own beliefs accordingly.”(Moussaïd) This quote shows how humans take social interactions and integrate it into their mindset and changing their behaviors based on interactions. The author uses experiments and studies to truly evaluate how social influences can affect how one behaves and acts. It also goes into depth about how individuals and groups behave once influenced. This will help with my project as it shows how social influence can positively and negatively control individuals. It helps support the idea that humans can be wrongly influenced into invading another land.
